On April 29, 2001, Babu Chiri Sherpa died on Mount Everest, as he attempted his 11th summit. Babu was acknowledged as one of the strongest climbers in the Himalaya and famous in mountaineering circles for his overnight stay on the summit of Everest. His name even reached national hero status in his home country, Nepal. His motives were far from selfish though. Babu had a dream to build a school in the village where he was born, so that his six children and the other children of the village would have the opportunity to receive a formal education.

This dream was realized and has continued to spread to nearby villages.
