The weather changed! A Pacific storm came in overnight and engulfed our tent in snow and prevented us moving higher up the glacier. It was not until late the next day we managed to move higher for a brief ski towards our objective, Mount Munday. It was then apparent that since we had stashed food and fuel far below for a quick dash to the summit that we did not have enough supplies to stay on the mountain and we would have to retreat.
And that is were we encountered the "two day shortcut". Bob, my partner insisted that we could ski straight off the side of Scar Mountain and be back at the abandoned loggng camp from were we started five days earlier in just a few hours. Unfortunately neither Bob or myself were prepared for the steep terrain, the isothermic snow and the tree wells that sucked you in. Fortunately we made our way down through the forest and onto the old logging roads that led to the abandoned logging camp. The bad news; a Grizzly had taken our bear spray and destroyed the cart we stashed to help carry our gear on the logging road. And more bad news, we were out of food and the Cessna that was to pick us up was grounded due to bad weather. The good news; the loggers had left some cans of tuna and beans that we were able to sustain ourselfs with until the plane arrived the next day.
A great and memorable adventure testing ourseld and our gear.
