Though my mission was not as tough as I have read about on your blog, it was an adventure for me just the same. It started back in March of this year planning my trip to Rocky Mountain National Park. Of course it started with submitting my itinerary to the park service for their approval. I FedEx'ed my itinerary and was lucky enough to get all of my first choices on camp sites. We wouldn't want to make the park service mad, now would we? The trip started at 4:30 AM with the drive out to Colorado from North Carolina. After two days of hard driving I was finally in Grand Lake, CO. This is one little town that you must visit at least once in your life. The people there are just awesome. Oh yeah, stop by Grumpy's if you like cold beer and want to actually experience the locals. After a two day rest period, I hit the trail. I linked a couple of trails together to make a 32 mile loop. I started off on the North Inlet Trail and hiked to my first camp sight which was at North Inlet Falls. The trail there is not too hard and you do pass by some really nice scenery.
Now remember, I live at about 700 feet above sea level and the thinner air can sometimes make a simple walk hard. After arriving at my sight, I started to pitch my Mountain Hardwear Alcove 2 tent. During this process, I heard a rather large snap. I turned to see what it was, and it was one of the largest moose that I have ever seen. I use to live in Park City, UT and hiked nearly every week and I know what a large moose is. But anyway, he did not seem too concerned with me other than just being curious. In all of my excitement I could not locate my camera and missed a truly good photo opp. After pitching the tent, I went to get my water for the night's meal of dehydrated food. After eating I visited the waterfall where I stayed for a couple of hours. Then I retired to my Mountain Hardwer tent and crawled into my Mountain Hardwear Trekker sleeping bag. By the way, I had my Mountain Hardwear Nailhead pullover on while down at the waterfall.
After a good nights sleep, I got up and ate breakfast and headed off on Lake Nanita Trail. Before I forget, the whole time I was out I was wearing my Mountain Hardwear Canyon pants and when needed, my Mountain Hardwer Dome fleece hat. I just had to put that in as a selling pitch because I really would like the chance to win this prize. After arriving at Lake Nokani and Lake Nanita, I stayed to take some pictures of what I think were the coolest alpine lakes that I have ever seen. During this time, the weather turned against, well okay, for me. It started off as a light drizzle and then turned to hail, then snow. Totally cool!!! I stayed for a few hours just soaking up the beauty of this place and capturing it on film. I then returned to my campsite to get a good nights rest for my third day out. It came up one heck of a storm that night at about two in the morning. Lightening, hail and rain. Not once did I worry about getting wet inside my tent. Thank you Mountain Hardwear.
The third day arrived so I packed up and headed off on North Inlet Trail until it met up with the Tonahutu Creek Trail. The trail tops out right at 12,300 feet above sea level. And to stay with my e-mail address, it was above tree line. I have to say that I saw some of the coolest mountains that anyone could ask to see. I now understand what people mean when they say you become as one. After a quick lunch, I proceeded to my next campsite which was Haynach. This is a cool little lake accessed by Haynach Lakes Trail. Seems to be way off the beaten path, I highly recommend it. Upon my arrival, I pitched my faithful tent, fetched some water and then ate watching the sun go down over the peaks leaving the shadow of the mountain imprinted on the lake. After a very sleepless night, the Elk's were bugling ALL night long, I got up to yet be surprised by the weather. Same story, lightening, hail and snow. I wouldn't trade it for the world or have it any other way. Sometimes, you just have to have it rough to test the gear you buy.
I packed up again, and made double time back to Grand Lake where I found that I had a visiter in my car. A field mouse was kind enough to me to leave his calling card on my dashboard. No, I had no food or any smells coming from the car. I drive a Subaru. Maybe he thought that I was Ricky or something. I don't know. After a few choice words, I proceeded to Poncho's and Lefty's to devour a cheeseburger. This might not sound like much to you guys but it was an adventure to me. By the way, this was a solo trip. My girlfriend could not make this trip. Oh well, her loss. I would like to take this time to say thank you. Thank you Mountain Harwear for building such great equipment. I have more Mountain Hardwear gear than I have time to mention. I not only use it, I abuse it at times. Again, thanks guys and I hope that all of you have nothing but happy trails.
